A Field Guide to Quiet Mornings — reading guide
Essays by Henrik Aalto: the first pages, questions for reading groups and a word about the author.
About the book
Twenty short essays on the first hour of the day: coffee, birdsong, the light on a kitchen table and the art of not checking your phone.
The first pages
The kettle is the first bird of the morning. It starts low, uncertain, as if it has forgotten the song, and then remembers all at once. I used to switch it off before it finished. Now I let it sing. It is the only thing in the house that is allowed to be loud before seven, and it has earned it: it has been doing the same work, every day, for eleven years, and has never once asked me how I slept.
For reading groups
- Which morning ritual would you keep, and which would you drop?
- Is attention a habit or a gift?
- Which essay would you read aloud to someone?
