In conversation with Maren Holt

The author of Letters from the Lighthouse on islands, diaries and writing to someone who may not exist.

We met Maren Holt on a grey morning, in a café facing the harbour, two days before Letters from the Lighthouse went to print.

Why letters?

“Because a letter is a promise that someone will listen. Even if you are alone on a rock in the sea, writing a letter means you are not talking to yourself.”

And why out of order?

“That is how we remember people. Not from the beginning. From a sentence, a smell, a window — and then we go back and forth.”

What are you writing now?

“A diary. I have kept one since I was nine. Maybe one day it will be a book. Probably not.”
